When you are creating an outfit for a  LARP character , there are a few things to consider. Like the character you portray, the type of LARP you're playing, and the weather. Here are some basic tips that might  help point you in the right direction.

• Start simple, many shops often sell generic pieces that can be used as a base to build on. You can also add more distinctive pieces over time as you develop your character. It's not a bad thing to start out with peasant garb, a simple tunic and pants make for a pretty good base layer. We here at Verillas have several items such as our medieval tunics and warrior pants.

• Wearing multiple simple elements together can be more interesting than a single fancy piece. Layers can also help you stay warm or cool depending on the weather. Vests and coats are a great idea for layers over your tunic and pants. The bramblewood long vest is my personal favorite, I may or may not have four of them to go with many of my outfits.

• A lot of LARPs have a fantasy bend to them so when choosing pieces for the costume try and find items with few modern elements, such as zippers, or press studs, Modern styled pockets and period items are usually made from a thicker material like cotton canvas or linen. Though if you are going for a LARP that isn't period or fantasy this point is a bit less important.

• Consider protective clothing, this could include thermals under your kit, a warm tunic, a broad brimmed hat, or a shielding hood. Adapting to the season is key in making your outfit survive how the weather might affect it. For example, you might need to make a lighter tunic or to ditch a jacket for warmer weather and you might need to throw a cloak on should the temp drop.

• Add accessories, they can make a good outfit a great one. A way to carry hydration is a must, a mug with a strap for the belt, a drinking horn or a water skin are all ideas to keep in mind, not having water is a sure fire way to cut your event short. Of course having a belt and pouches to carry things, also they can help tie your whole outfit together.

• Consider what you'll use your outfit for, if your character is likely to get dirty, you might want to choose an outfit that can show dirt and wear and tear. So think about the durability of the materials like linen, canvas, or leather. 

• Lastly but still very important is footwear, I'm partial to our rampart boots, but really any comfortable and sturdy boot or shoe will do and try to aim for something versatile so it can fit several outfits or themes. Most LARPs don't stress to much about your foot wear fitting the theme as it can be a pricy investment, but one I believe is well worth it.

Remember that LARPs vary as much as any other type of game. There is no one end all be all answer. The LARP you end up joining should have their own costume guides to help. And the players in that game should be able to give more detailed advice. Don't be ashamed to not have the best kit at start, you have time to grow and expand your collection.
